Freshwater engineering technique transforms barren Ladakh land into green cover

LEH, July 6, 2026:- An ambitious ecological restoration project aimed at reclaiming 800 acres of barren land in Ladakh has begun yielding remarkable results through a simple and cost-effective freshwater engineering technique.

After treating the arid soil with fresh glacier water for a few days, mustard seeds were scattered across the tracts. In a little over a month, widespread germination has successfully transformed these barren wastelands into a vibrant, fertile green cover.

The pioneering effort was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for reversing land degradation and desertification. The initiative demonstrates that simple, scientific techniques can effectively solve complex environmental challenges.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena stated that this success reaffirms the Union Territory administration’s unwavering commitment to ecological regeneration, sustainable agriculture, and a greener future for Ladakh and its people.
