Cloudbursts trigger flash floods and severe infrastructural damage in Kashmir’s Shopian district

Shopian, August 3, 2026: Two separate cloudburst incidents triggered widespread devastation in the Badherma and Chhajmarg areas of South Kashmir’s Shopian district today, causing severe flooding and damaging critical public infrastructure.

Torrential rainfall following the cloudburst in Budhrehama sent massive volumes of floodwater rushing from the higher reaches into low-lying residential areas, inundating several houses and damaging boundary walls and local structures.

Meanwhile, the cloudburst in Chachmarg brought down heavy mud, debris, and large boulders, burying local roads and transforming thoroughfares into stream-like channels that completely disrupted vehicular traffic and regional connectivity.In the nearby Zawoora area, a major macadamized road was extensively damaged after being washed away by the strong currents, leaving a significant stretch ripped apart and making local transit extremely hazardous.

District administration officials are closely monitoring the evolving situation and assessing the full extent of the damage, confirming that no loss of life has been reported so far. Local authorities stated that comprehensive restoration work and debris clearance operations will commence as soon as weather conditions improve.
