Jammu Srinagar National Highway Remain Closed, Mughal Road and SSG Road Open with Strict Regulations

JAMMU/SRINAGAR, 07 September: -The Traffic Police Headquarters of Jammu and Kashmir has issued a comprehensive traffic plan for Sunday, September 7, 2025, with the critical Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) continuing to remain closed for all types of vehicular movement. The closure is a result of a significant road blockage between Jakheni in Udhampur and Bali Nallah, severely disrupting the primary arterial route connecting the Jammu region to the Kashmir Valley.According to the official advisory, no vehicle will be permitted to travel from Nagrota in Jammu towards Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, Banihal, or Srinagar. Similarly, movement in the opposite direction from Srinagar towards Jammu is also prohibited.

In a partial relief measure, commuters residing in Katra, Reasi, and Udhampur town have been advised to carry photo identification cards to prove their local residency, which will facilitate their movement in the permitted areas. The public has been urged to check the real-time status of the road on the traffic police’s official Twitter handle and Facebook page before planning any journey.

The route of Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag (NH-244) also remains out of bounds for traffic, leaving limited options for inter-regional travel. However, two other major routes will be operational, albeit with strict regulations and conditional upon fair weather and road conditions.

The Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari (SSG) Road will see regulated traffic movement after receiving clearance from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) followed by Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) will be allowed to travel from Minamarg towards Srinagar between 5:00 AM and 10:00 AM.

Conversely, vehicles will be permitted to move from Sonamarg towards Kargil from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The advisory specifically requests security force convoys to plan their movement in a manner that avoids disrupting civilian traffic flow.Providing a crucial link, the historic Mughal Road will be open for Light Motor Vehicles, including passenger and private cars, from both the Jammu and Srinagar sides via Poonch.

This is contingent on a green signal from the road maintenance agency (GREF). Movement will be permitted from Behramgala (Baffliaz) between 6:00 AM and 5:30 PM and from Herpora in Shopian from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. In a significant restriction, only stranded HMVs (six-tyre vehicles) at Herpora will be allowed to move towards Poonch, and no HMVs will be permitted from Herpora after 9:00 AM. Furthermore, no Kashmir-bound HMVs from Jammu will be allowed on the Mughal Road at all.

To ensure smooth passage and adherence to the tight schedule, the traffic police have issued detailed cut-off timings for LMVs. Vehicles starting from the Jammu side must pass through Akhnoor by 12:30 PM, Rajouri by 3:30 PM, and must reach the key checkpoint of Behramgala by 5:30 PM. From the Srinagar side, vehicles must depart TRC Srinagar by 2:30 PM and pass through various checkpoints like Pantha Chowk by 3:00 PM and Herpora by 5:00 PM.

The Traffic Police Headquarters has strongly advised all travelers to personally confirm the status of these routes before commencing their journey. They have provided a list of essential contact numbers for Traffic Control Units: Jammu (0191-2459048, 9419147732), Srinagar (0194-2450022, 18001807091), Ramban (9419993745), Udhampur (8491928625), PCR Kishtwar (9906154100), and PCR Kargil (9541902330). Travelers can also dial the universal emergency number 103 for assistance.
