Srinagar Airport Runway Closure Suspended: CM Omar Abdullah Thanks Centre for Ensuring Uninterrupted Air Connectivity
SRINAGAR, JULY 04, 2026 — Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today expressed his gratitude to the Government of India for its prompt and positive response in suspending the proposed runway closure at Srinagar Airport.
The Chief Minister had personally intervened and taken up the matter with central authorities to safeguard the interests of passengers, trade, and the local tourism sector, all of whom faced severe disruption under the initial plan. Expressing his appreciation, Abdullah thanked Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu for acceding to the Jammu & Kashmir government’s request.
He noted that the impending closure had already triggered widespread travel difficulties and forced numerous tourists and tour groups to cancel their planned visits. Emphasizing that seamless air connectivity is absolutely vital for the region’s economy—especially during the peak tourist season—the Chief Minister highlighted that this timely decision by the Centre will effectively prevent major disruptions to travel, commerce, and public convenience.
