UT Ladakh and ITBP sign historic pact to procure local farm produce and boost border economy

LEH, May 27, 2026 :- In a significant move to create assured market linkages for local farmers, cooperative societies, and Farmer Producer Organizations in Ladakh, including those in remote border villages, a historic Memorandum of Understanding was signed today between the ITBP Leh Frontier and the UT Ladakh Cooperatives Department.

The agreement addresses a long-standing challenge faced by regional farmers who frequently suffer financial losses due to the lack of accessible markets for their perishable goods.

Under the terms of this newly signed agreement, the procurement and supply of fresh vegetables, dairy products, and other essential food items will be sourced locally through Ladakh’s Cooperative Societies, Farmer Producer Organizations, and Primary Agricultural Credit Societies.

The initiative aligns closely with the central vision to enable Central Armed Police Forces and the Indian Army to procure local produce through cooperatives, thereby generating sustainable employment and fostering self-reliance across border regions.

This collaborative initiative is expected to economically empower local cooperatives, strengthen rural livelihoods, and encourage reverse migration by creating viable economic opportunities within the villages.

At the same time, the partnership ensures a steady supply of fresh and nutritious food items for ITBP personnel serving under harsh weather conditions in the remote frontiers of Ladakh.
