CBI Arrests Proclaimed Offender in Tripura Chit Fund Scam Case
KOLKATA, May 13, 2026: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested Sanjit Chakraborty, a proclaimed offender, in connection with two major chit fund fraud cases in Tripura.
Chakraborty, who served as the CMD of Cosmic Negociators Pvt. Ltd., was apprehended in Kolkata on May 12 after evading law enforcement for over a decade. He had been at large since 2013, when Tripura Police first registered an FIR against him.
The investigation into these cases was taken over by the CBI following notifications from both the Tripura and Central Governments under the DSPE Act. Chargesheets filed by the agency reveal that the accused was involved in duping the public of approximately 7.48 crore in the first case filed in 2015, and an additional 27.13 lakh in a second case filed in 2024.
Throughout these legal proceedings, Chakraborty remained listed as an absconding accused.The arrest was the result of sustained efforts by the agency, which utilized technical and physical surveillance, CDR analysis, and open-source intelligence to locate the suspect in West Bengal.
Authorities have secured a transit warrant from a Kolkata court to bring him to Tripura for production before the competent court. While the primary suspect is in custody, the CBI has stated that further investigation into the scam is currently continuing.
