NIA Arrests Hizbul Mujahideen Narco Terrorist Shera Following Extradition From Portugal
New Delhi, May 13, 2026:- The National Investigation Agency has successfully arrested wanted narco-terrorist Iqbal Singh, also known as Shera, after securing his extradition from Portugal.
Shera, a central figure in a significant Hizbul Mujahideen terror financing case, was taken into custody by an NIA team at the Delhi airport immediately upon his arrival today.
His capture follows years of sustained diplomatic and legal efforts after he absconded from India in 2020. This successful extradition marks a major victory for Indian authorities in their ongoing efforts to dismantle Pakistan-backed narco-terrorism and cross-border criminal networks.
Investigations revealed that Shera, a native of Amritsar, was the mastermind behind a sophisticated narco-terror module that smuggled heroin from Pakistan into Punjab. He coordinated the distribution of narcotics and used hawala networks to funnel the illegal proceeds to terror operatives based in Pakistan and Kashmir.
By establishing a dedicated gang in Punjab, Shera facilitated the transfer of vast sums of money to support the activities of the Hizbul Mujahideen. His arrest ends a long-standing pursuit that included a non-bailable warrant issued in 2020 and an Interpol Notice active since June 2021.
The case originated following the arrest of Hilal Ahmed Shergojri, a close associate of deceased terror commander Riyaz Ahmed Naikoo, from whom Punjab Police recovered significant amounts of drug money.
After taking over the investigation, the NIA focused on dismantling the entire network and bringing the key handlers to justice. With Shera now in Indian custody, the agency aims to further uncover the financial links and operational structures of the module.
Further investigations are currently underway to identify other associates involved in the anti-national conspiracy.
