LG Ladakh launches massive cherry tree plantation drive in Phyang

LEH, May 10, 2026:- Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena launched a significant environmental initiative today by planting 2100 cherry saplings at Phyang in Leh. The plantation drive was carried out under the guidance of Drikung Skyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche and organized by the Drikung Dharma Foundation with the support of the Sankalp Taru Foundation.

This effort serves as a major step toward expanding the green cover in the high-altitude region, specifically aimed at combating environmental degradation and fostering sustainable development practices across the territory.

During the event, the Lieutenant Governor introduced a new public participation program designed to involve the local community in ecological conservation. He encouraged every family in Ladakh to plant at least 10 saplings and take responsibility for their continued growth and survival.

To incentivize the initiative, the administration announced that families achieving the highest survival rates for their plants would be officially recognized and rewarded, ensuring a long-term commitment to the region’s greenery. The administration has set an ambitious goal to increase Ladakh’s total green cover to at least 5% within the next two years.

By boosting the number of trees, the government expects to improve local oxygen levels and enhance the region’s appeal as a premier eco-friendly tourist destination.

This strategic move aligns with broader efforts to preserve the fragile Himalayan ecosystem while promoting a greener and more sustainable future for the residents and visitors of Ladakh.
