J&K Government Integrates 17500 Migrant Ration Cards into NFSA and Extends April Food Distribution

JAMMU, APRIL 25: Principal Secretary of the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation & Reconstruction, Chandrakar Bharti, chaired a high-level meeting today to review the transition of Kashmiri and Jammu migrants into the National Food Security Act (NFSA) database.

The meeting revealed that over 17,500 migrant ration cards have already been successfully integrated, with another 8,000 cards currently in the pipeline for processing. This administrative shift, supported by recent amendments to the J&K Food Security Rules, aims to ensure that migrants can seamlessly access various government social sector schemes.

To ensure no beneficiary is left behind during this transition, the government has announced a one-time extension, allowing the ration for April 2026 to be collected throughout the month of May in addition to the regular May entitlement. The administration clarified that despite the integration into the NFSA database, the existing scale of ration distribution will remain protected.

All relief ration card holders, regardless of their specific categorization, will continue to receive their entitled 11 kg of free ration per person per month along with 1 kg of sugar.

For those in the non-relief category, such as pensioners, ration will be provided at government-approved rates as per their entitlement.

Currently, 32 designated ration depots in Jammu district and several others across the Jammu province are operational, allowing migrants the flexibility to collect their supplies from the nearest available location.

Beyond food security, the integration has already enabled approximately 450 families to access critical social welfare benefits, including old age and disability pensions, marriage assistance, Ayushman Bharat, and various scholarships.

To further this reach, the Social Welfare Department, in coordination with the Relief Organization, will organize special camps to assist eligible beneficiaries with online applications.

Principal Secretary Bharti emphasized that the department is committed to fully operationalizing this new scheme for all migrants within a minimum timeframe, ensuring a hassle-free experience and the strengthening of the social safety net for the displaced community.
