JAMMU, Feb 10, 2026 – Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary announced in the Legislative Assembly today that the government is considering the allotment of five-marla land plots to eligible families displaced by the devastating flash floods in Bagra village, Kathua. Responding on behalf of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to a query by Legislator Dr. Bharat Bushan, the Deputy CM detailed the relief efforts following the disaster that struck on the night of August 16, 2025. He confirmed that the families of the deceased have received a total of ₹6.5 lakh in compensation—comprising ₹4 lakh from SDRF norms, ₹2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, and ₹50,000 from the Red Cross Society.
The Deputy CM highlighted that the heavy rains and subsequent landslides resulted in two fatalities and extensive damage to both private and public infrastructure, including seven fully destroyed houses that have since been compensated under SDRF guidelines. While affected residents were initially moved to safe shelters with essential amenities, the focus has now shifted to long-term recovery. This includes a ₹1,500.71 lakh proposal currently being processed by the Jal Shakti Department for flood protection and channelization works along the Sahar, Maggar, and Sukhal Khads under NABARD funding. Regarding local infrastructure, Choudhary assured the House that while temporary fixes are in place, the damaged 1.20 km link road in Bagra is slated for full reinstatement by August 2026.
