New Processing Center in Anantnag to Transform Horticulture Sector and Local Economy

BIJBEHARA, April 14, 2026 :-Chief Minister Omar Abdullah officially opened a modern Fruit and Vegetable Processing Centre today at the International Fruit Market in Jablipora, Anantnag.

Built at a cost of 4.30 crore under the CAPEX budget, this state-of-the-art facility is designed to strengthen the local horticulture value chain. The inauguration ceremony included high-ranking officials and ministers, such as Sakeena Masood Itoo and Javid Ahmad Dar, who gathered to celebrate a project aimed at reducing post-harvest losses.

The Jammu and Kashmir Horticultural Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation managed the execution of the project, focusing on enhancing the quality and marketability of regional produce.

The facility is equipped with comprehensive infrastructure, including canning and packaging units, a specialized mushroom processing area, and a tomato puree manufacturing line.

One of the most significant additions is a high-capacity fruit drying unit capable of processing up to 500 kg per hour, alongside a 20 metric tonne freezing chamber.

These advancements are expected to drastically improve product shelf life, allowing local farmers to reach national and international markets more effectively.

During the tour, the Chief Minister noted that building such robust infrastructure is essential for ensuring better financial returns for the agricultural community and fostering a sustainable engine of economic growth.

In addition to the formal opening, the Chief Minister spent time visiting various stalls organized by agriculture departments to interact with local entrepreneurs and self-help groups.

He expressed strong support for the innovative techniques and locally developed products on display, encouraging growers to diversify into high-value crops.

The government has pledged continued assistance through financial aid, specialized training, and improved market linkages to help grassroots innovations scale into successful enterprises.

This initiative is expected to not only boost the rural economy but also create a variety of new employment opportunities for the youth in the region.
