LG Vinai Kumar Saxena coordinates comprehensive action plan to combat drug abuse in Ladakh

LEH, May 27, 2026:- In response to growing concerns regarding drug abuse in Ladakh, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena chaired a comprehensive review meeting today with senior government officials, medical experts, civil society members, religious organizations, and NGOs.

The high-level meeting was convened to thoroughly assess the current situation and formulate effective remedial measures to curb the menace across the region.The Lieutenant Governor directed authorities to implement a series of proactive steps, including a massive crackdown to completely eliminate drug cartels.

The enforcement strategy will involve random searches of vehicles, including local taxis, alongside strict vigilance at key entry points into Ladakh such as Zoji La and Sarchu. Additionally, surveillance will be significantly enhanced around identified hotspots, including schools, colleges, and popular tourist places.

To support families and patients, the emergency number 112 will be established as an integrated helpline. A dedicated team will manage this service to ensure seamless transport and rehabilitation through coordinated care.

Furthermore, a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed with Mahabodhi Karuna Charitable Hospital to introduce meditation and retreat-based healing sessions under psychiatric supervision, adding a holistic dimension to the region’s rehabilitation facilities

.Emphasizing that the drug menace poses a grave threat to the youth and society, the Lieutenant Governor stated that alongside strict action against drug traffickers, significant focus must be placed on counseling, treatment, and rehabilitation. He advocated for a compassionate, human approach to treating victims and called for collective action from all stakeholders to build a drug-free Ladakh.
