Jammu and Kashmir Weather Forecast: Meteorological Department Issues Heavy Rainfall and Flash Flood Alert

SRINAGAR — July 17, 2026: The Meteorological Department (MET) in Srinagar has issued a comprehensive weather forecast and safety advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, predicting a significant shift from hot and humid conditions to widespread, heavy rainfall over the coming week. According to the MET center, the region will experience generally hot and humid weather from July 17 to July 18, with the possibility of brief thundershower spells at scattered places. However, the weather pattern is expected to take a sharp turn starting July 19, bringing a spell of rain and thundershowers to many places, alongside heavy rain and brief intense showers at isolated locations across the Jammu Division.

The weather is projected to intensify significantly between July 20 and July 22. During this period, Jammu and Kashmir will remain generally cloudy with frequent spells of rain and thundershowers at most places. A severe weather alert has been sounded for these dates, as few districts of J&K are expected to witness heavy rain, brief intense heavy showers, and torrential rain, with heavy to very heavy downpours targeted at a few places within the Jammu Division. This intense wet spell will gradually begin to subside by July 23, though many places will still experience rain and thundershowers, with heavy showers persisting in parts of the Jammu Division. By July 24 and July 25, the weather will significantly improve, reducing to brief spells of rain and thundershowers at only a few places.

In light of these predictions, the MET department has issued a stern advisory warning of potential disruptions and natural hazards, particularly between July 19 and July 23. The anticipated heavy to very heavy rainfall—especially in the Jammu Division—is most likely to occur during the late afternoon, evening, late night, and early morning hours. Consequently, there is a strong possibility of flash floods, landslides, and mudslides at vulnerable locations from July 20 to July 22. Authorities also warn of a significant rise in water levels across rivers and sub-basins, which may lead to waterlogging and minor flooding in low-lying areas. Farmers throughout the region have been strongly advised to suspend all agricultural and farm operations during this period, and all stakeholders and residents are urged to plan their activities accordingly to ensure safety.
