Ladakh Launches Environment Protection Force: 100 Ex-Servicemen Deployed to Save Fragile High-Altitude Ecosystems

LADAKH : JULY 04, 2026 :- In a pioneering initiative to safeguard the region’s unique ecology, Ladakh has officially deployed 100 ex-servicemen from the Indian Army, Para-Military forces, and the Ladakh Scouts into the newly formed Environment Protection Force (EPF). Announcing the initiative, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, highlighted the transition of these veterans “from defending our borders to defending our natural heritage!” These newly appointed EPF personnel will serve as dedicated protectors of Ladakh’s fragile high-altitude ecosystems, endangered wildlife, and highly sensitive ecological zones, marking a significant shift toward structured environmental enforcement in the union territory.

The creation of the EPF is specifically designed to act as a powerful deterrence against the rising menace of illegal off-roading, a practice that has increasingly threatened local wildlife and polluted pristine landscapes. Unlike traditional awareness campaigns, these EPF personnel are fully authorized to detect, prevent, and issue on-the-spot challans (fines) to violators. Operating on a monthly remuneration basis, the program successfully bridges a dual purpose: providing meaningful rehabilitation and livelihood opportunities for retired jawans while significantly bolstering the local administration’s enforcement capabilities. Expressing strong confidence in the initiative, LG Saxena commended the veterans’ willingness to serve Mother Nature, stating that the force will play a vital role in preserving Ladakh’s delicate ecosystem and promoting sustainable, responsible tourism.
