Census 2027 Houselisting Schedule Announced: First Phase to Begin in April 2026
New Delhi, January 8: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially notified the timeline for the first phase of the Census of India 2027, confirming that houselisting and housing census operations will be conducted nationwide between April 1 and September 30, 2026.
In a formal gazette notification issued by the Office of the Registrar General of India, the central government declared that each state and Union Territory will carry out the exercise within a specified 30-day window during this six-month period.
Marking a significant shift toward a digital census, the notification also introduces a self-enumeration option, allowing citizens to provide their details online during a 15-day period immediately preceding the start of the house-to-house visit in their respective regions.
This first phase will systematically map buildings and households to create the framework for the second phase—population enumeration—which is scheduled to take place in February 2027.
