VARANASI, Jan 4, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament in Varanasi today via video conferencing, welcoming over 1,000 players from 28 states to the historic city.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister drew a poignant parallel between the game of volleyball and India’s development journey, noting that success in both fields depends on coordination, trust, and the “Team First” spirit. He emphasized that the nation is progressing through the collective consciousness of its citizens, much like a volleyball team where every player fulfills their specific role to achieve a common victory.
Highlighting the shift in India’s sporting culture since 2014, he expressed immense pride in the “Gen-Z” athletes who are consistently hoisting the tricolor on global platforms.
During his address, the Prime Minister announced that India is firmly positioned on the global sporting map, with the nation set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and actively pursuing a bid for the 2036 Olympics.
He detailed significant reforms, including the National Sports Governance Act and the Khelo Bharat Policy 2025, which aim to make the sports model “athlete-centric” through transparent selection and scientific training.
He noted that the sports budget has seen a substantial increase over the last decade, transitioning sports from a hobby to a viable career for Indian youth.
The Prime Minister also lauded the transformation of Varanasi’s infrastructure, specifically the modern Sigra Stadium, and encouraged the visiting athletes to experience the city’s rich heritage and hospitality while competing at the highest national level.
