Jammu Police Seize Vehicles Loaded with Illegally Transported Khair Wood at Rakh Muthi
JAMMU, DECEMBER 28: In a major strike against the illegal timber trade, a police team from Police Post Jourian intercepted and seized two vehicles carrying a massive consignment of Khair wood during the intervening night of December 27 and 28.
Acting on specific intelligence and routine surveillance, the police party, supervised by Incharge Choki Officer Jourian, Sanjeet Singh, established a special checkpoint at Rakh Muthi. Around 3:30 AM, a Scorpio (PB-09G-4072) and a Mahindra Load Carrier (JK02BM-7125) were signaled to stop for inspection. However, the drivers attempted to evade the checkpoint and managed to flee into the nearby darkness, abandoning their vehicles.
Upon a detailed search of the abandoned vehicles, the police discovered Khair wood logs weighing approximately 50 to 60 quintals. Preliminary investigations suggest the timber was being smuggled for unauthorized commercial purposes. The Jammu Police have taken both vehicles and the entire timber load into custody.
An official report has been filed at Police Post Jourian, and the Forest Department has been formally notified to initiate further legal proceedings and technical valuation of the seized forest produce. This operation underscores the department’s heightened vigilance against environmental crimes and the illegal exploitation of forest resources in the region.
