Jammu Monsoon Preparedness 2026: JMC Commissioner Orders Fast-Track Drain Desilting to Prevent Waterlogging

JAMMU, JULY 18, 2026: In response to the arrival of the monsoon season and predictions of heavy rainfall across Jammu city, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Commissioner Devansh Yadav has directed officials to accelerate the cleaning and desilting of major drains and nallahs. The directive aims to guarantee the smooth flow of rainwater and significantly minimize the risk of urban waterlogging. The Commissioner personally inspected several wards to review the ongoing progress of these desilting operations and evaluate the condition of the city’s extensive drainage network. Additionally, he assessed the construction of new drainage infrastructure being executed by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED) under the SASCI Scheme at Jallo Chak, Digiana, and Greater Kailash.

To ensure minimal disruption during the rainy season, the Commissioner instructed executing agencies to properly safeguard construction materials and execute all ongoing projects with strict quality control and robust protective measures, allowing work to continue despite adverse weather conditions. Yadav emphasized that regular desilting, the timely completion of drainage infrastructure, and continuous monitoring are vital to preventing urban flooding, protecting residential zones, and ensuring an uninterrupted flow of stormwater. He affirmed that the corporation has instituted comprehensive measures to protect the lives and property of citizens. Furthermore, he appealed to the public to refrain from dumping plastic waste, garbage, or construction debris into drains, as these practices choke the network and increase flood risks.

To mitigate hazards before the rains intensify, the JMC has launched a round-the-clock desilting drive targeting 29 major nallahs within its jurisdiction. This cleanup operation covers highly flood-prone and waterlogging-sensitive localities, including Greater Kailash, Sainik Colony, Valmiki Colony, Sanjay Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Gadi Garh, Gujjar Basti, Nanak Nagar, Gangyal, Trikuta Nagar, the Railway Station area, Model Town, Jeevan Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Channi Himmat, Shanti Nagar, Kunjwani, Bathindi, Sunjwan, Preet Nagar, Talab Tillo, and Anand Nagar. Yadav concluded by stating that the JMC will maintain rigorous, continuous monitoring of the drainage system and stands ready to deploy additional machinery, manpower, and emergency response teams throughout the entire monsoon period.
