Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reviews Shopian progress and announces 76 crore development package
SHOPIAN, July 2, 2026 — Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a comprehensive review meeting of Shopian district today to assess the progress of developmental works, the implementation of key government schemes, and the overall delivery of public services.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring balanced and equitable development across the district, the Chief Minister dedicated development projects worth over ₹76 crore to the people of Shopian, laid the foundation for major infrastructure works, and interacted with farmers, fruit growers, and public delegations to address their concerns.
The review meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education Sakina Itoo, Minister for Agriculture Production Department Javid Ahmad Dar, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, and Members of the Legislative Assembly Shabir Ahmad Kullay and Showkat Hussain Ganai, alongside Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Dheeraj Gupta, the Shopian Deputy Commissioner, and other senior officials.
The meeting focused on accelerating infrastructure development, strengthening essential public services, and ensuring the timely completion of ongoing projects. Deputy Commissioner Shopian gave a detailed presentation highlighting the district profile, progress achieved under centrally sponsored schemes, and the physical and financial status of various departments.
Addressing the meeting, Omar Abdullah commended the district administration team for their efforts, noting that while Shopian is a geographically small district with unique challenges, its identity is intrinsically linked to its world-renowned apple industry, scenic beauty, and the historic Mughal Road. He acknowledged prevailing financial constraints but asserted that they would not become an obstacle to progress, promising that every issue and demand raised by elected representatives would be addressed in a time-bound manner.
He also directed officers to immediately rectify identified shortcomings and expedite action on Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment projects.Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister dedicated and laid the foundation of 13 developmental projects with a cumulative cost of ₹76.45 crore, spanning roads, bridges, drinking water supply, urban development, rural infrastructure, and horticulture. The inaugurated projects included the upgradation of the Shirmal-Wathoo-Matipora road, multiple water supply schemes, residential accommodation for Panchayati Raj Institution members at Gagren, the Trenz-Sheikhpora Bridge, and the upgradation of the Safanagri-Lamine Darbagh Wachi Road.
He also laid e-foundations for the Doompora multi-cell causeway, town beautification through improved drains, lanes, and street lighting, and advanced composting units at the Aglar Mega Fruit and Vegetable Mandi and Allowpora. At Aglar, he physically laid the foundation stone for an auction platform to strengthen post-harvest infrastructure and improve marketing facilities for growers.
While interacting with representatives of the Fruit Mandi Association, farmer groups, and horticulturists, the Chief Minister reaffirmed that agriculture and allied sectors remain the backbone of the region’s economy. He assured growers that concerns relating to controlled atmosphere storage facilities, shop availability, and marketing infrastructure would be addressed on priority.
Furthermore, he promised concrete measures to tackle the menace of spurious pesticides, work toward introducing effective solutions for weather-based crop insurance, and provide hailstorm protection nets to safeguard farming interests. Later, the Chief Minister met with several public delegations to review local grievances and visited exhibition stalls set up by government departments and local entrepreneurs, praising the efforts made to promote local enterprise and rural livelihoods.
