Zojila Tunnel Breakthrough Near in Jammu and Kashmir

JAMMU, June 8, 2026 — India is on the verge of a historic infrastructure milestone as the final breakthrough of the Zojila Tunnel is scheduled to take place tomorrow. The thirteen point one five kilometer engineering marvel will establish the first-ever all-weather road connectivity between the Kashmir valley and Ladakh.

Located between Baltal and Meenamarg, the structure is set to become the longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel in the world built at such a high altitude. The massive project is designed to bypass one of the most hazardous Himalayan corridors, a route that traditionally shuts down for several months every year due to severe weather, heavy snow, and avalanches.

Sitting at an elevation of nearly eleven thousand five hundred and seventy-eight feet above sea level, the tunnel is being hailed as a critical breakthrough for regional transport and strategic connectivity in the mountain sector.

Tunnelling operations have been carried out simultaneously from both the West Portal at Baltal and the East Portal at Meenamarg. Achieving the final breakthrough means the highly challenging underground excavation phase is officially complete.

Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited is executing the landmark project for the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.Engineers utilized the New Austrian Tunnelling Method to navigate the volatile rock conditions and fragile geology of the Himalayan range.

This technique relies on sequential digging, immediate structural reinforcement using shotcrete and rock bolting, and constant monitoring of the ground. This flexible approach proved essential for maintaining safety and steady progress in one of the toughest underground environments in the country.
