India’s First High-Altitude Wildlife Safari Launched in Ladakh to Boost Eco-Tourism and Protect Snow Leopards

LEH, AUGUST 06, 2026 — In a major milestone for sustainable eco-tourism and environmental conservation, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, announced the launch of India’s first-ever High-Altitude Wildlife Safari in the Union Territory. The decision was formally approved during the maiden Governing Body meeting of the newly established Snow Leopard & High-Altitude Nature (SHAN) Conservation Society. Under this pioneering project, guided Jeep safaris will be introduced across well-known snow leopard and birdwatching trails spanning Hemis National Park, Changthang and Karakoram wildlife sanctuaries, as well as ecological landscapes like Drass, Nubra, and Sham.

The initiative primary aims to address critical environmental challenges by curbing unauthorized off-roading and minimizing human disturbance to fragile mountain habitats, all while delivering an enhanced experience for global visitors. Emphasizing a community-driven model, the government plans to train local youth as specialized wildlife guides, empower women artisans, and launch comprehensive plastic-free campaigns to ensure residents become equal financial and operational stakeholders in preserving Ladakh’s rich, vulnerable ecosystem.
