Jammu and Kashmir Rainfall Update: Meteorological Centre Releases District Data with Heavy Rain Forecast Till August 4

SRINAGAR, July 31 — Jammu and Kashmir recorded above-normal precipitation during the ongoing monsoon season from June 1 to July 30, with the Kashmir Division logging a 20 percent departure above normal and the Jammu Division registering a 27 percent excess, according to data released by the Meteorological Centre Srinagar.

In the Kashmir Division, seasonal rainfall averaged 151.06 mm against the normal benchmark of 126 mm between June 1 and July 30. During the weekly period from July 24 to July 30, Kashmir recorded an average of 26.91 mm compared to the normal of 21 mm, representing a 28.14 percent departure. Baramulla experienced a significant seasonal surplus of 91 percent with 214.3 mm against a normal of 111.9 mm, while Ganderbal recorded 222.6 mm (60 percent excess), Pulwama logged 133.7 mm (55 percent excess), Anantnag saw 209.5 mm (33 percent excess), and Srinagar recorded 141.6 mm (20 percent excess). Kupwara logged a normal seasonal level of 157.8 mm (16 percent excess), Kulgam registered 180 mm (9 percent excess), and Bandipore recorded near-normal figures at 107.1 mm (2 percent deficit).

Conversely, Badgam and Shopian recorded deficient seasonal rainfall, with Badgam receiving 71.8 mm against 100.4 mm (28 percent deficit) and Shopian getting 72.2 mm against 136.3 mm (47 percent deficit).

During the last week alone, Kulgam saw a 163 percent surge with 65.7 mm of rain, Ganderbal recorded a 104 percent excess with 32.1 mm, Pulwama saw a 103 percent surplus with 21.1 mm, and Anantnag recorded a 98 percent excess with 45.4 mm.

In the Jammu Division, total seasonal rainfall reached an average of 482.18 mm against the normal of 379.98 mm, reflecting a 26.89 percent departure. For the weekly period ending July 30, the division averaged 91.42 mm against a normal of 87.3 mm, marked by intense local spells.

Udhampur registered the highest overall seasonal rainfall in the region at 898.1 mm against a normal of 462.5 mm, marking a 94 percent excess, followed closely by Samba with 593 mm (77 percent excess), Ramban with 356.8 mm (75 percent excess), Rajouri with 468.6 mm (50 percent excess), and Poonch with 508 mm (46 percent excess). Reasi, Doda, and Jammu posted normal seasonal totals, with Reasi receiving 740.2 mm (9 percent excess), Doda recording 227.7 mm (7 percent excess), and Jammu logging 448.5 mm (2 percent excess).

Meanwhile, Kathua and Kishtwar remained deficient for the season, with Kathua recording 439.6 mm against 594.3 mm (26 percent deficit) and Kishtwar receiving 141.3 mm against 212.2 mm (33 percent deficit).

Weekly totals in Jammu highlighted exceptionally heavy rainfall in Ramban, which received 106.9 mm against a normal of 32.2 mm (232 percent excess), and Udhampur, which recorded 233.3 mm against 109.9 mm (112 percent excess). Doda also experienced a weekly surge of 67.6 mm (87 percent excess), while Reasi recorded 172.2 mm and Jammu saw 89.4 mm during the seven-day window.

Looking ahead, weather authorities have forecasted one to two spells of light to moderate rain or thunder across many places till August 4, primarily towards afternoon and early morning hours. Weather officials also warned of brief, intense heavy showers in select isolated pockets across Jammu and Kashmir during this forecast period.
