Jammu and Kashmir Weather Update Forecasts Heavy Rain and Flash Flood Risk

SRINAGAR – July 16, 2026:- The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has issued a comprehensive weather forecast and safety advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, predicting a shift from hot and humid conditions to widespread rainfall.

From July 16 to 18, the region will experience generally hot and humid weather, with only a slight possibility of brief rain or thundershowers in a few places. The weather pattern is expected to change on July 19, bringing partly cloudy skies and spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers to many areas, alongside brief but intense heavy showers in isolated pockets of the Jammu Division.

A significant increase in precipitation is projected between July 20 and 23, during which the region will remain generally cloudy. Most places will experience multiple spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers, with the peak monsoon activity expected on July 21 and 22.

During this peak period, heavy rainfall and brief, intense downpours are likely to impact several districts across both the Kashmir and Jammu Divisions, particularly during the late afternoon, evening, night, and early morning hours.

Weather conditions are expected to improve slightly by July 24 and 25, tapering off to brief spells of rain or thundershowers in just a few locations. In light of the heavy rainfall forecast, weather officials have issued a severe advisory warning of potential flash floods, landslides, and mudslides in vulnerable areas, particularly within the Chenab Valley, the Pir Panjal Range, and the hilly terrains of the Kashmir Division from July 20 to 22.

Low-lying areas face risks of waterlogging and minor flooding, and a significant rise in water levels is expected across rivers, streams, and local channels, especially in the Jammu Division. Consequently, authorities have strongly advised farmers to suspend all agricultural operations between July 20 and 23, while travelers, transporters, tourists, and trekkers are urged to plan their journeys with extreme caution.
