National Human Rights Commission issues notice to Punjab government after stray dogs maul young girl to death
NEW DELHI, June 15, 2026:- The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report regarding the tragic death of an eight-year-old girl who was attacked and killed by a pack of stray dogs in the Rupnagar district of Punjab.
The incident occurred on June 10, 2026, while the young girl was playing outside her house. Recognizing that the contents of the news report raise serious issues concerning the violation of human rights, the Commission has issued a formal notice to the Punjab Chief Secretary, demanding a detailed report on the matter, including the specific actions taken by local authorities, within two weeks.
According to media reports published on June 11, 2026, local residents managed to rescue the victim from the pack of dogs and rushed her to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, but she unfortunately succumbed to her severe injuries along the way.
The victim belonged to an economically vulnerable family; her father passed away approximately four years ago, and her mother works as a domestic help to support the household.
