India strongly objects to Pakistan scheduled assembly elections in occupied Gilgit-Baltistan

NEW DELHI June 06,2026 — The Government of India has lodged a strong protest with Pakistan regarding its upcoming plans to hold general elections for the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, which are scheduled for June 7, 2026. According to an official release from the Ministry of External Affairs , India firmly objects to the conduct of these elections in Indian territories that remain illegally and forcibly occupied by Pakistan.

Reiterating its long-standing geopolitical stance, the Indian government stated that the entire Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, which includes Gilgit-Baltistan, are integral and inalienable parts of India following the complete, legal, and irrevocable accession of Jammu and Kashmir to the nation in 1947.

India emphasized that political exercises of this nature cannot mask the underlying issues of grave human rights violations, political repression, economic exploitation, and the denial of freedom in these illegally occupied areas.

Categorically rejecting any attempts by Pakistan to bring material changes to the region, India underscored that such actions cannot alter the fact that Pakistan remains in illegal possession of Indian territories, which it must vacate immediately.
