Rakesh Aggarwal Appointed as New Director General of National Investigation Agency (NIA)
NEW DELHI, January 14, 2026 – The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has officially approved the appointment of Rakesh Aggarwal as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
A 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Aggarwal was previously serving as the Special Director General (SDG) within the NIA.
The decision follows a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to fill the leadership role of India’s premier counter-terrorism law enforcement agency.
According to the official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, Aggarwal’s tenure will begin from the date he assumes charge and will extend until August 31, 2028.
This date coincides with his scheduled superannuation, though the appointment remains subject to further government orders.
The position is classified under level-16 of the Pay Matrix, reflecting the high-level seniority and responsibility associated with the role of heading the NIA.
As the new Director General, Aggarwal will be tasked with overseeing the agency’s critical mandate of investigating and prosecuting offenses affecting the sovereignty and integrity of India.
