Kashmir Snowfall Update: Series of Western Disturbances to Hit J&K, Plains to Wait Longer

SRINAGAR, January 14, 2026 — Residents and tourists in the Kashmir Valley hoping for a major whiteout in the lowlands may have to wait a bit longer, as significant snowfall in the plains remains unlikely until at least January 20.

According to the latest forecast from Kashmir Weather, a sequence of four Western Disturbances (WDs) is set to influence Jammu and Kashmir starting this week. The first system is expected to arrive between January 16 and 18, primarily affecting the higher reaches with light to moderate snow, while the plains might only see light rainfall or scattered clouds.

A second, slightly more impactful weather system is predicted to move through the region from January 19 to 21. While not classified as a “strong” disturbance, it holds the potential for light rain or snow across both the mountains and the plains; however, a “lucky scenario” would be required for any visible accumulation in the valley floors.

Following these, two more disturbances are anticipated between January 22 and 26, with the final system of the month arriving around January 27. While the persistent dry spell—which has severely impacted air quality and water levels during the ongoing Chillai-Kalan—is likely to break, the immediate outlook suggests that the most dramatic winter scenery will remain confined to the peaks for the next several days.
