Zojila Tunnel Breakthrough Realized as Game Changer for Ladakh Border Connectivity Says LG Ladakh
LEH, June 9, 2026 — Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena described the successful breakthrough of the Zojila Tunnel as a monumental milestone that will act as a major game-changer for the development of the Union Territory.
Highlighting the initiative as a signature project envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Saxena noted that the completed infrastructure will dramatically upgrade transport links in the strategic border areas of Ladakh while establishing permanent, year-round road connectivity with the rest of India.
The Lieutenant Governor extended appreciation to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for bringing the complex engineering project to fruition and for continuously backing Ladakh with critical new road infrastructure networks.
The ongoing expansion of the regional transport system is expected to fundamentally transform the high-altitude territory by addressing longstanding winter isolation challenges.
According to territorial authorities, the operationalization of the all-weather link will stimulate comprehensive regional growth. The tunnel is designed to reliably expand tourism, unlock diverse new economic and livelihood opportunities for the local population, and strengthen ongoing efforts to build a sustainable infrastructure model across Ladakh.
