Indian Coast Guard recovers adrift scientific data buoy in Bay of Bengal

CHENNAI, JULY 5, 2026:- The Indian Coast Guard Ship Rani Gaidinliu successfully recovered an adrift scientific data buoy in the Bay of Bengal despite facing challenging sea conditions.

The data buoy, which belongs to the National Institute of Ocean Technology under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, had drifted over 150 kilometers away from its original designated position off the coast of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh.

The recovery operation aligns with the core charter of duties of the Indian Coast Guard, which remains committed to supporting and securing scientific endeavors and crucial oceanographic data buoys.

These buoys play a vital role in collecting essential meteorological and ocean data, making their timely retrieval critical for ongoing scientific research and marine safety.
