Ladakh LG Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurates Mahey Tokpo Raldho irrigation canal in Nyoma
LEH, May 14, 2026 — Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated the 2.10 km Mahey Tokpo–Raldho Irrigation Canal during his first official visit to Changthang. Situated at an altitude of over 14,000 feet, the project was completed in record time following recent administrative interventions.
The canal is expected to provide essential water security and agricultural sustainability for farmers living in the remote Nyoma region.The project had been stalled for several months before work resumed in March this year. The final 850-meter stretch of the canal was finished in just two months.
Fed by Yaya Lake, the infrastructure will now irrigate approximately 100 acres of high-altitude land. Saxena commended the dedication of the officials involved for executing the engineering task under such demanding environmental conditions.In addition to the canal inauguration, a plantation drive was launched to plant 15,000 saplings along the waterway.
Organized with the support of Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche, the initiative focuses on soil conservation and strengthening the local ecological resilience. Saxena noted that these efforts are vital for the long-term environmental health of the challenging terrain.
