Pulwama Drug Crackdown: Peddler Arrested with Over 2kg of Poppy Straw in Chewekalan

PULWAMA, April 07, 2026 — Strengthening its ongoing offensive against the narcotics trade, the Pulwama Police successfully apprehended a drug peddler and seized a significant quantity of contraband during a routine check at Chewekalan. A police team from the Newa Police Post, while conducting specialized “naka” (checkpoint) operations, intercepted a suspicious individual identified as Ghulam Hassan Wani, son of Abdul Razaq Wani and a resident of Chewekalan.

Upon conducting a thorough search of a nylon bag in his possession, officers recovered approximately 2.3 kilograms of poppy straw. The illicit substance was immediately seized following the completion of all standard legal formalities on-site, and the suspect was taken into official custody.

Following the arrest, authorities registered FIR No. 49/2026 under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Pulwama Police Station, and a comprehensive investigation has been initiated to uncover any potential links to wider smuggling networks.

The Pulwama Police have reiterated their steadfast commitment to eradicating the drug menace from the district to protect the health and future of the local youth.
