J&K Traffic Police Launch Major Crackdown on Pressure Horns; Violators Face Fines up to ₹10,000

JAMMU April 05,2026 :- Acting on the directives of the Inspector General of Traffic Police, J&K authorities have initiated an intensive UT-wide enforcement drive to eliminate the illegal use of pressure horns, hooters, and multi-toned sound devices.

This crackdown follows the 2013 mandate by the Supreme Court of India and strictly enforces Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which penalizes the use of non-compliant horns with fines reaching ₹10,000 and potential imprisonment of up to six months.

In an official handout, the Traffic Police emphasized that unauthorized sound devices—including air pressure horns and trumpets—contribute to significant noise pollution and public nuisance, violating Rule 119 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989.

Motorists across Jammu and Kashmir have been strongly advised to immediately remove any illegal sound-producing equipment to avoid stringent legal action.

Specialized Traffic Police units are now deployed at key highways, urban centers, and high-congestion zones to ensure full compliance with the ban.

To foster community participation in this environmental and public safety initiative, the department has urged citizens to report violations to the Traffic Control Units (TCUs) in Jammu, Ramban, or Srinagar.

By intensifying these checking drives, the J&K Traffic Police aim to curb the menace of noise pollution and restore a quieter, safer environment for the general public.
