New parallel tunnel proposed for Chenani-Nashri route on National Highway 44
UDHAMPUR, June 9, 2026Union Minister Jitendra Singh announced that the National Highway Authority of India has proposed the construction of a new two-lane tube tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir.
The new tunnel will run parallel to the existing Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel on the Chenani-Nashri route along National Highway 44. Singh expressed his gratitude to Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for accepting the request to initiate this infrastructure project.
The upcoming infrastructure expansion aims to effectively manage the rising volume of traffic on this vital highway section and significantly improve the overall travel experience for commuters.
The existing Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel, which this new tube will complement, was originally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 2, 2017.
