Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundaram Awarded Kirti Chakra for Exceptional Bravery in Kulgam Operation

New Delhi :- In a proud moment for the Indian Army and the nation, Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundaram A of the Regiment of Artillery, serving with 34 Rashtriya Rifles, was conferred the prestigious Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, for displaying extraordinary courage during a counter-terrorism operation in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

On December 19, 2024, while participating in an intense anti-terrorist operation, Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundaram sustained severe gunshot injuries to his face and right shoulder during a fierce firefight. Despite the life-threatening wounds and extreme pain, he refused to withdraw from the operation and continued to engage the terrorists with remarkable determination.

Displaying exceptional bravery and unwavering commitment to duty, he fought in close combat and successfully neutralised a hardcore terrorist at close range. His courageous actions played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the operation and safeguarding his fellow soldiers.

Recognising his indomitable spirit, gallantry, and devotion to duty, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, presented him with the Kirti Chakra during the Defence Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Yesterday June 8, 2026.

The award citation praised Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundaram A for his exceptional bravery, steadfast resolve, and selfless service in the face of grave danger. His heroic actions stand as a shining example of the courage, sacrifice, and professionalism that define the Indian Army.
