Kashmir GI QR code system wins national SKOCH award

SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI, JUNE 24 — The Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, has received the prestigious national SKOCH Award for its innovative GI QR Code Management System. The technology-driven system is implemented through the Pashmina Testing and Quality Certification Centre at the Craft Development Institute and the NABL-accredited Carpet Testing Laboratory at IICT in Srinagar.

This award recognizes the pioneering use of technology to strengthen product authenticity, quality assurance, sustainability, and artisan welfare across the region’s handicrafts sector.According to a department spokesperson, this initiative is among the first comprehensive QR code-based Geographical Indication certification mechanisms for handicrafts in the country.

The award was received by Sajid Nazir, Senior Faculty at the Craft Development Institute, during a ceremony held in New Delhi. The system allows buyers to instantly verify the authenticity, origin, and quality of premium heritage crafts, including Pashmina and Kani shawls, Sozni embroidery, and hand-knotted carpets.By scanning the QR code, consumers can trace a product back to its specific artisan or institution, ensuring transparency and preventing counterfeiting.

Thousands of handicraft products have already been labeled under this initiative, which has significantly enhanced consumer confidence, expanded market access, and supported export growth.Director of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, Mussarat Islam, congratulated the technical teams and stated that the recognition reflects a deep commitment to preserving Kashmir’s rich craft heritage.

He added that the QR code system provides direct visibility to artisans, helping them connect with buyers and access niche global markets to improve their economic prospects. The SKOCH Award is a benchmark national recognition honoring innovative initiatives that promote excellence, good governance, and inclusive development.
