J&K Air Travel Shutdown on October : CM Omar Abdullah Urges Railway Minister to Boost Vande Bharat Services During Srinagar Airport Closure
NEW DELHI, JUNE 10 — In a proactive move to safeguard Jammu and Kashmir’s economy ahead of a critical infrastructure shutdown, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met with Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi today to negotiate an emergency expansion of rail services.
The Chief Minister raised urgent concerns regarding the upcoming closure of Srinagar International Airport from October 1 to October 15, 2026, for vital runway maintenance and resurfacing. Stressing that this two-week flight suspension directly collides with the peak autumn tourist rush and festive holiday season—including Durga Puja—Abdullah strongly urged the Railway Ministry to aggressively scale up the frequency of Vande Bharat trains to the Kashmir Valley.
By expanding rail capacity during the airport blackout, the administration aims to establish a high-speed transit alternative, ensuring the seamless movement of tourists, pilgrims, and locals while protecting the region’s vital tourism economy.
Beyond the temporary October contingency plan, the high-level meeting focused on the long-term optimization of the newly established direct rail link between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley, which was jointly flagged off by Vaishnaw and Abdullah earlier this year on April 30. Praising the transformative impact, punctuality, and passenger comfort of the current Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, the Chief Minister advocated for broader regional accessibility.
Specifically, Abdullah formally requested the Union Minister to approve a strategic stoppage for the Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag station. This proposed halt is designed to unlock major transit convenience for the heavily populated districts of South Kashmir, further integrating the region’s socio-economic landscape with the rest of the nation.
