Omar Abdullah meets Narendra Modi to discuss statehood and development in Jammu and Kashmir
NEW DELHI, June 11 — Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi today to discuss vital issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir, focusing heavily on the early restoration of statehood, economic priorities, and regional development.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister conveyed the deep aspirations of the local population for statehood, emphasizing that its restoration would serve as a crucial step in strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing public participation, and accelerating the region’s overall development. He formally requested that the Union Government advance this process at the earliest.
The Chief Minister provided the Prime Minister with a comprehensive update on the economic trajectory of Jammu and Kashmir, alongside details of ongoing development initiatives across key sectors. While highlighting the progress made in infrastructure development, public service delivery, and community welfare, the Chief Minister also pinpointed specific areas requiring sustained financial backing and investment from the Centre.
He emphasized that continued support from the Government of India is essential to accelerate economic growth, enhance regional connectivity, generate sustainable jobs, and expand public infrastructure.Particular attention was drawn to several critical regional needs, including the fuller exploitation of the hydropower potential in Jammu and Kashmir and the urgent need to expand rail services on the Udhampur–Srinagar line.
This rail augmentation is deemed vital ahead of the upcoming apple harvest season and the scheduled temporary closure of Srinagar Airport. Additionally, the Chief Minister advocated for the development of new tourism circuits and sought sustained economic relief and promotional support for local farmers, artisans, and MSMEs.
Concluding the discussion, the Chief Minister affirmed that Jammu and Kashmir remains committed to being a productive partner in the growth of the nation, noting that the combination of restored statehood and robust central support would solidify the region’s path toward inclusive prosperity and good governance.
