Satish Sharma Orders Strict Enforcement and Petrol Pump Inspections to Protect Consumer Rights

JAMMU, APRIL 17: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Satish Sharma chaired a comprehensive review meeting of the Legal Metrology Department today to strengthen market enforcement and protect public interests.

During the session, the Minister received briefings from the Controller of Legal Metrology and other senior officials regarding current inspection drives and manpower deployment.

He emphasized that the department plays a critical role in safeguarding consumer rights and directed officials to intensify regular market inspections to ensure that enforcement remains visible and effective in deterring violations.

A major focus of the meeting was the inspection of petrol pumps, with Satish Sharma ordering frequent and surprise checks to prevent measurement and delivery malpractices.

He noted that even minor discrepancies in fuel dispensing negatively impact consumers and must be met with firm penal action against erring outlets.

The Minister also instructed officials to expand their scope to include retail shops and commercial establishments, ensuring the use of standardized weights, proper equipment verification, and the mandatory display of price lists to promote transparency.

In his concluding remarks, Satish Sharma called for a zero-tolerance policy against any form of consumer exploitation or fraud. He urged the department to adopt technology-driven monitoring systems and launch awareness campaigns to educate citizens about their rights.

To ensure uniform implementation of laws across all regions, he stressed the importance of better coordination between the department and district administrations.

The senior officers assured the Minister that immediate steps would be taken to enhance transparency and strengthen market practices as per his directives.
