Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurates rejuvenated historic T-Trench water body in Leh
LEH, June 15, 2026: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated the rejuvenated T-Trench water body, a historic spring-fed water source restored to meet the drinking water needs of nearly 2,000 households while providing a new recreational space for visitors in Leh.
Built in the 1980s, the T-Trench once served as the primary source of drinking water supply for the entire city of Leh but was later left redundant due to unabated and unplanned construction around the site. Following directives issued in March this year to restore the crucial water source in a mission mode, the project was successfully completed to revive the public asset.
The newly restored T-Trench has successfully enhanced its daily water discharge capacity from 3 lakh liters to 5 lakh liters. Beyond increasing the direct water supply, the project will significantly facilitate groundwater recharge through eco-friendly gabion stone masonry structures designed to allow natural water seepage through their pores.
The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that the rejuvenation of the T-Trench is not merely an infrastructure project, but a reaffirmation of the age-old ethos of Ladakh that respects and conserves water by seamlessly integrating traditional wisdom with modern conservation practices.
