Ladakh tourism department condemns illegal off roading in Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary

LEH, June 20, 2026 — The Department of Tourism in Ladakh has strongly condemned a recent incident of illegal off-roading within the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary near Hanle. On June 17, a tourist vehicle from Himachal Pradesh was reported conducting reckless off-road driving and chasing the endangered Tibetan Gazelle, causing significant disturbance to the wildlife and the fragile cold desert ecosystem.

Acting promptly, law enforcement authorities intercepted and seized the vehicle at the Loma Police Check Post on June 18, and legal proceedings have been initiated under the Wildlife Protection Act.

Administrative Secretary of Tourism Sanjit Rodrigues emphasized the critical importance of responsible tourism, stating that the pristine cold desert ecosystem of Ladakh is extremely fragile and any action harming wildlife is unacceptable.

He urged all visitors to stick strictly to designated routes, follow sustainable tourism practices, and remain mindful of the unique biodiversity of the region.

The department has requested all stakeholders to report such violations and actively sensitize tourists about appropriate behavior while visiting these ecologically sensitive areas to preserve Ladakh’s natural heritage.
