Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Inaugurates First Him Sarovar Water Body in Leh
LEH, June 21, 2026 :- Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated the first of four large water bodies created under Project Him Sarovar at Spituk Farka today by releasing glacier water into it from the adjoining Igoo–Phey Canal.
By harnessing seasonal flows, this pond will recharge groundwater and rejuvenate a large portion of barren land in the area. The environmental initiative is expected to pave the way for the commencement of agricultural activities after ages, while providing long-term, sustainable water security in the cold desert of Leh.
Constructed in a record time of 60 days at an altitude of 11,500 feet, the new water body measures 60 by 40 meters and has a depth of two meters. It is designed to store approximately 60 lakh liters of glacier meltwater, ensuring its optimal use for irrigation, ecological restoration, and community needs.
Three similar large ponds are currently under construction in the area and will be dedicated to the people soon, reflecting the Union Territory administration’s commitment to environmental resilience, agricultural growth, and the prosperity of Ladakh.
