Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chairs high level meeting to review Muharram arrangements across Jammu and Kashmir
SRINAGAR, June 15, 2026 :- Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level meeting today to review the ongoing arrangements for the smooth observance of Muharram across Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, various cabinet ministers, advisors, legislators, administrative secretaries, divisional commissioners, and district deputy commissioners, along with prominent clerics and representatives from various Shia organizations.
The Chief Minister noted that extensive groundwork has already been undertaken at the grassroots level and emphasized that the collective review was aimed at assessing accomplishments and ensuring any remaining tasks are completed in a coordinated and efficient manner.
During the meeting, special focus was directed toward ensuring an uninterrupted power supply, with instructions given to the Power Development Department to guarantee regular electricity at all major congregation venues and procession routes, backed by generators and battery-inverter systems. The Chief Minister also called on departments to explore roof-top solarization for all major Imambaras in the region.
For drinking water management, the Jal Shakti Department was directed to ensure a continuous supply of potable water, deploying clean water tankers and establishing static distribution points where vehicle movement is restricted.Sanitation and cleanliness measures were heavily emphasized, with instructions for urban local bodies to intensify cleaning operations around religious sites and procession paths, utilizing additional manpower and coordinating with the Fire and Emergency Services Department for high-pressure road washing.
On health preparedness, the Health and Medical Education Department was tasked with deploying adequate medical personnel, critical care ambulances, and emergency medical camps at strategic locations to remain fully operational throughout the period.The Chief Minister also reviewed traffic and infrastructure plans, instructing traffic police and civil administration to ensure the smooth movement of processions while minimizing inconvenience to commuters and tourists. The Roads and Buildings Department was directed to prioritize filling potholes and leveling roads along procession routes.
To ensure accountability, all designated nodal officers were ordered to remain accessible round-the-clock, and a Chief Minister’s Secretariat was announced to actively oversee the arrangements and address public grievances. Furthermore, the Chief Minister assured the attendees that the government would consider a dedicated allocation in the next budget to strengthen Muharram-related infrastructure and streamline future preparatory works.
