Waheed Ur Rehman Para Rebuts National Conference Claims Over Rajya Sabha Election Results

SRINAGAR, May 6, 2026 — Pulwama MLA and PDP leader Waheed Ur Rehman Para has issued a sharp rebuttal to the National Conference regarding the recent Rajya Sabha voting controversy, describing the accusations against his party as both inaccurate and counterproductive.

In a detailed statement, Para suggested that the ruling party is using the election outcome as a tactical diversion to shift public focus away from more pressing regional issues, such as the Siraj-ul-Aloom controversy and the reported exclusion of Urdu from official documentation. The PDP leader pointed to a history of political friction, noting that the National Conference was responsible for the dissolution of the PAGD and the strategic exclusion of the PDP from the INDIA alliance during the assembly elections.

Despite these past grievances, Para emphasized that the PDP chose to provide unconditional support to the National Conference. He remarked that the responsibility for the electoral outcome rests within the leadership at Nawai Subh rather than with external partners, defending the actions of Mehbooba Mufti as a gesture of political magnanimity.

Para also addressed technical criticisms regarding the appointment of polling agents, arguing that the National Conference held the primary responsibility for managing the voting process.

He questioned why the Chief Minister would trust a party agent if he remains skeptical of the legislators themselves. Highlighting internal inconsistencies within the ruling party, Para referenced previous instances of poor communication within the National Conference and warned that persistent attacks on the PDP only serve to weaken opposition unity and potentially benefit the broader political agenda of the BJP.

Concluding his statement, Para advised the government to move past the loss of a single seat and focus on delivering effective governance through its majority of 50 MLAs and 5 MPs.

He cautioned that the current hostile rhetoric could create future diplomatic challenges for Omar Abdullah, should the political landscape shift to a point where the National Conference requires the support of the PDP’s four legislators to maintain stability.
