Zojila Tunnel Breakthrough Expected by May End to Provide All Weather Connectivity to Ladakh

NEW DELHI, April 21, 2026:- The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh recently met with the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, to review the status of critical infrastructure developments within the Union Territory.

A primary focus of the discussion was the Zojila Tunnel, with the Minister announcing that a major breakthrough in the project is anticipated by the final week of May. This milestone marks a significant step toward providing Ladakh with consistent, year-round surface connectivity to the rest of India, eliminating the seasonal isolation caused by heavy winter snowfall.

Beyond the tunnel progress, the meeting covered several vital regional projects, including the upgradation of NH-3 within Leh city, the development of the Leh Bypass, and various road initiatives currently pending under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund.

Minister Gadkari issued directives to departmental officials to fast-track clearances for these projects, emphasizing the need for completion within a strict, time-bound framework.

The expansion of these road networks is expected to transform the socio-economic landscape of the region. By enhancing safety and accessibility, the infrastructure improvements aim to bolster tourism and trade, which are central to the local economy.

Furthermore, these developments are projected to foster long-term economic growth and generate sustainable employment opportunities for the residents of Ladakh.
