Udhampur district administration issues urgent heat wave advisory as temperatures surge
UDHAMPUR, May 21, 2026 — The District Disaster Management Authority in Udhampur has issued a comprehensive public health advisory following forecasts of a significant temperature spike and impending heat wave conditions across the Jammu and Kashmir region.
Signed by Additional Deputy Commissioner Prem Singh, the official directive outlines critical safety protocols for the general public, transit passengers, and commercial workforces to mitigate the risks of severe heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and medical-emergency heat strokes.
The administration has urged residents to maintain strict hydration by regularly consuming water, oral rehydration solutions, and traditional cooling fluids like buttermilk or lemon juice, even when not actively thirsty.
The public is strongly advised to stay indoors or seek well-ventilated shade during peak radiation hours from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, wear lightweight cotton clothing, and protect their heads with umbrellas or caps when outdoor travel is unavoidable.
Vulnerable groups, including elderly individuals, young children, pregnant women, and patients with pre-existing medical conditions, have been requested to exercise extreme caution and minimize exposure.
Special focus has been directed toward industrial employers and vehicular safety during the high-temperature period. Business owners are mandated to adjust labor schedules to cooler morning or evening hours, provide shaded work environments, and ensure ample drinking water is accessible at all worksites.
For commuters, the advisory warns against leaving children, pets, or highly flammable items like lighters, gas canisters, and batteries inside locked vehicles.
In case of emergency heat stress symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or rapid heartbeat, citizens have been directed to immediately relocate to a cool place, seek shade, and contact the District Emergency Operation Centre or the emergency response services.
