Supreme Court Mandates Dog Shelters After Sterilization, Warns Officials of Contempt
NEW DELHI — May 19, 2026: The Supreme Court of India has firmly refused to recall its previous directives regarding the management of stray dogs, mandating that canines captured from public places must not be released back into the streets after undergoing vaccination or sterilization. In a decisive move to address growing public safety concerns, the apex court ordered local authorities to instead confine these stray dogs to dedicated shelters.
To ensure strict compliance with its ruling, the Supreme Court issued a stern warning to bureaucrats and municipal authorities, stating that officials who fail to implement these guidelines could face severe disciplinary action and contempt of court proceedings. Additionally, the court directed all States and Union Territories to significantly strengthen their Animal Birth Control (ABC) centers, guarantee an uninterrupted supply of anti-rabies vaccines, and take all legally permissible actions to neutralize dangerous or rabid dogs to protect citizens.
