Shopian Illegal Mining Crackdown: J&K Police Seize 8 Tractors, Register FIR

SHOPIAN, JAMMU & KASHMIR — In a major crackdown on environmental exploitation, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have seized eight tractors engaged in the unauthorized extraction and transportation of minerals in the Shopian district. The operation, which took place in the Turkwangam area, is part of an ongoing, sustained campaign by local authorities to curb rampant illegal mining activities across the region.

According to official sources, a vigilant police team from the Turkwangam Police Post intercepted the vehicles during routine patrolling. The operators failed to produce valid royalty documents, leading to the immediate seizure of all eight tractors. Following the operation, law enforcement authorities registered FIR No. 78/2026 under relevant legal sections at the Zainapora Police Station, and a formal investigation has been launched to track down further violations.

Reiterating their firm stance on environmental protection, the J&K Police emphasized their commitment to safeguarding the district’s natural resources and vowed strict legal action against anyone found violating mining laws. Authorities have also urged local residents to cooperate by reporting any suspicious or unlawful mining activities, assuring the public that the identity of all informants will be kept strictly confidential.
