Meghalaya Cabinet Approves Official Status for Khasi and Garo Languages

SHILLONG, April 16, 2026The Meghalaya Cabinet has reached a historic milestone by approving the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026, which effectively repeals the Meghalaya State Language Act of 2005.

Under this new ordinance, Khasi and Garo will join English as the official languages of the state, allowing both to be used for formal government communications.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated that this landmark decision is intended to strengthen the state’s cultural identity and streamline administrative accessibility.

Furthermore, the government plans to amend the Meghalaya State Legislature Act of 1980, which will eventually permit legislators to debate and speak in Khasi and Garo during Assembly sessions alongside English.

The implementation of this ordinance will also facilitate the use of Khasi and Garo in various public examinations, though the Chief Minister noted that the transition will be gradual to ensure a proper framework is established.

This move is strategically aligned with the state Assembly’s ongoing resolution to have both languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

By granting them official status at the state level first, the Meghalaya government aims to send a powerful message to the Government of India regarding the significance of these languages.

This proactive step is expected to bolster the case for national recognition while simultaneously empowering local communities and preserving the linguistic heritage of the state.
