Ladakh Lieutenant Governor orders major wage revision for contract and daily wage workers
LEH, May 17, 2026:- Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has ordered a major wage rationalization for daily wagers, need-based workers, and casual laborers, including sweepers, cleaners, and gardeners across various government departments.
This landmark reform aims to ensure dignified wages to marginalized wage earners who had been working for years on monthly pay as low as 300 to 500 rupees.
Under the newly approved wage matrix, skilled workers will now be paid 575 rupees per day, while unskilled workers will earn 450 rupees per day on a pro-rata basis, resulting in a substantial increase in their income.
The Lieutenant Governor has directed a comprehensive verification of all such workers and the formal revision of their wages within a strict timeline of 20 days.
He stated that the previous abysmal pay scales violated the fundamental principles of social justice and reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring fair and dignified wages for all wage earners in accordance with the Minimum Wages Act.
The administration also acknowledged the immense contribution of these workers in delivering critical public services across the Union Territory of Ladakh.
