SRINAGAR, JULY 23 — Reaffirming his administration’s unwavering commitment to fostering local entrepreneurship, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah assured young innovators of sustained financial and policy support to help scale their ventures into successful enterprises. Addressing the two-day ASCEND 2026 Startup Summit at SKICC—organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI)—the Chief Minister emphasized that building a thriving startup culture requires governments to break away from traditional risk-averse approaches. Stating that the administration is not afraid of failure, Abdullah highlighted that even if only two out of ten funded startups succeed, their impact far outweighs the losses, promising that the government will back promising ideas to drive the region’s economic growth.
During the summit, which serves as a convergence point for innovation, investment, and policy, Chief Minister Abdullah distributed ₹5 lakh seed fund cheques to seven selected startups and launched several new initiatives, including the Junior Level Idea Challenge 2026 for school students, the Startup Idea Challenge 2.0 for higher education, and key publications such as the Compendium of Business Opportunities in J&K. Praising practical ground-level innovations showcased by local youth—ranging from anti-freeze water pipe sensors and smart meters to automated gas shut-off systems—Abdullah expressed confidence that J&K’s current base of nearly 1,400 registered startups will double repeatedly in the coming years. Senior officials, including Commissioner Secretary of Industries & Commerce Vikramjeet Singh and Director JKEDI Mohammad Younis Malik, echoed these sentiments, highlighting J&K’s emerging status as a high-potential frontier market and calling for streamlined procedures to turn local talent into future industry unicorns.
